Add a new attribute to the catalogue

This page is for administrators: the steps described require access to the administration area.

In this tutorial, you add a language-specific “Material” attribute to products in a new group on the product page, and make it available as a search filter. At the end, you will see it on a product page.

You need:

  • access to the Attributes administration area;
  • the Can edit all fields permission;
  • at least one product of the entity type to which you are adding the attribute.

1. Open the product attributes

  1. In the menu, select Admin, then Attributes.
  2. In Entity, choose the product entity type, for example “Product - Articolo”.

The list of attributes for the entity type appears. Look at the TAB NAME column: tab names start with two sorting characters, for example 01 General.

2. Create the attribute

  1. Click Add attribute.
  2. Fill in the fields:
    • Name: Material;
    • Typology: Attribute;
    • Label: Materiale;
    • Attribute type: TextLocaleValue, a text value for each language.
  3. In Tab name, choose an existing tab, for example 01 General.
  4. In Group name, choose New group and enter 90 Materials in New group name. The number 90 places the group at the bottom of the tab; on the product page, the group will be called “Materials”.

You cannot change Name, Typology or Attribute type after saving. Check them before you continue.

An attribute name can contain only letters and numbers and must start with a letter: spaces, hyphens, underscores, accented letters and other symbols are not allowed. We recommend joining words together and starting each with a capital letter: for example, CoverMaterial for a covering material.

3. Choose where it appears

  1. In the Visibility section, select Show on filters so you can search for products by material.
  2. Leave the Permissions and Hidden User Groups sections empty: the attribute remains visible to everyone and editable by anyone with Can edit all fields.
  3. Click Save.

The Attribute saved message appears and the attribute is listed with TAB NAME 01 General and GROUP NAME 90 Materials.

4. Check the product

  1. Open a product of the entity type.
  2. Open the “General” tab.

At the bottom of the tab, you will find the “Materials” group with the “Material” attribute.

What you have achieved

The entity type now has a new language-specific attribute in a dedicated group on the product page, which you can use as a filter when searching for products.

To decide who can edit it, read Who can view and edit an attribute; to change its position within the group, read How to sort attributes, groups and tabs.
