Attribute settings
This page is intended for administrators: the operations described require access to the administration area.
You manage attributes under Admin → Attributes, selecting the entity type in Entity. The attribute form is divided into sections; some fields appear only for one of the two typologies, Attribute or Tech.Spec..
Main fields
| Field | Effect | Editable after creation |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Technical name. Letters and numbers only, starting with a letter. Must be unique within the entity type, regardless of case | no |
| Typology | Attribute for a standard attribute, Tech.Spec. for a technical specification | no |
| Label | Name shown to users on the record page | yes |
| Attribute type | Value type, described in Attribute types | no |
| Tab name | Tab where the attribute appears. New tab lets you specify a new tab in New tab name | yes |
| Group name | Group within the tab where the attribute appears. New group lets you specify a new group in New group name | yes |
An attribute name can contain only letters and numbers and must start with a letter: spaces, hyphens, underscores, accented letters and other symbols are not allowed. We recommend joining words together and capitalising the first letter of each word, for example CommercialName or PackageWeight.
The first two characters of tab and group names determine their sort order and are not shown on the product page. You set an attribute's position within its group using Sort attributes, as described in How to sort attributes, groups and tabs.
Tech specs only
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| Locale and Public Label | The tech spec's public label, one per language |
| Unit of measurement | Unit of measurement. Appears after the label on the record page, in the form “Label (unit)” |
| List of attribute sets | The attribute sets in which the tech spec appears, each with its own position in Sort order. You add them using Add attribute set; for media, these are the media types |
| Channel Types where this Tech Spec is hidden | Products only. The tech spec does not appear in the list of tech specs for these channel types |

| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| Read only | No user can edit the attribute on the record page; the value can only be updated by openlane's automated processes |
| Editable by | User groups that can edit the attribute. Appears only if Read only is not selected |
| Configurable by | User groups that can see the attribute in the administration area's Can edit all fields list without Attributes |
The full set of rules is described in Who can view and edit an attribute.

Buttons
- Configuration opens the attribute configuration, for types that support it. The options are described on each type's page, starting from Attribute types.
- Save saves the attribute.
Reference entity attributes
The attribute form for reference entities has fewer fields: Name, Label, Attribute type, Tab name, Group name, Read only, Show on filters, Show on left pane and Hidden User Groups. It has no typology, tech specs, Editable by, Configurable by, workflow, channel exports or help text, and offers only a subset of attribute types.
The attribute list
The list displays the NAME, LABEL, READ ONLY, TYPE, TAB NAME and GROUP NAME columns, sorted by tab, group and name. You can filter it using:
- Search, which searches names and labels;
- Typology, which shows either attributes or tech specs;
- Group, which shows attributes editable by a user group, meaning those with that group selected in Editable by;
- Workflow step, which shows the attributes for a workflow step.
Click the search button to apply the filters. In each row, Validation Rules opens the validation rules, Configure opens the configuration, Edit opens the form and Delete deletes the attribute.
