How to manage rule exceptions

This page is for administrators: the operations described require access to the administration area.

An exception changes an attribute's validation rule for a single channel, either for all products or only for products from selected brands. You need access to the Attributes administration area and the Can edit all fields user permission.

An exception replaces the entire rule: only the exception's checks and Validation Type apply to the channel. Make sure you configure all the checks that should apply to that channel, not just those that differ.

Add an exception

  1. From the menu, select Admin, then Attributes, and choose the entity type in Entity.
  2. In the attribute's row, click the Validation Rules icon.
  3. In the channel type section, click Exceptions. This opens Manage exceptions, which lists the exceptions.
  4. Click Add.
  5. In Channel, choose the channel. Only channels of this type are available; the other fields appear after you select a channel.
  6. In Validation Type, choose Error or Warning.
  7. In Brands, choose the brands the exception applies to. Leave the field empty to apply it to all products in the channel.
  8. Configure the checks. These are the same as those available for the rule and are described on each attribute type's page, starting from Attribute types.
  9. Click Save in the window, then Close.
  10. Click Save on the rules page.

The message Attribute saved appears.

Clicking Save in the window only updates the list of exceptions on the page. Exceptions are saved when you click Save on the page: if you leave before doing so, your changes are lost.

A channel can have only one exception per rule. If you choose a channel that already has one, the message There is already an exception. If you continue the exception will be overwritten appears: confirming replaces the existing exception.

When Brands is set, the exception applies only to products from those brands. Products with no brand or a different brand follow the channel type's rule.

Edit or delete an exception

  1. Open Manage exceptions as described in steps 1–3.
  2. In the exception's row, click the Edit icon to edit it, or Remove and confirm to delete it. You cannot change the channel when editing an exception.
  3. If you edited the exception, click Save in the window. Then click Close.
  4. Click Save on the rules page.

After saving

As with rules, saving exceptions does not revalidate products. To apply them immediately to all products, run Validate all products, as described in How to add a validation rule to an attribute.
