Tech specs and public labels

This page is for administrators: the operations described require access to the administration area.

A tech spec is an attribute that describes a technical characteristic of a product, such as dimensions, weight or material. It is an attribute like any other, created with the Tech.Spec. type instead of Attribute. You choose the type when you create it and cannot change it later.

Tech specs are only available for entity types with Has Tech Specs enabled.

Tech specs and attribute sets

A tech spec does not appear on every product, only on products whose attribute sets it is assigned to. The same tech spec can belong to several attribute sets, with a different position in each: dimensions might be the first characteristic for chairs and the third for lamps.

You manage assignments and order from the Tech specs page in the administration area, or from the settings for the individual tech spec.

Public labels

In addition to the label used in openlane, each tech spec has a public label for each language. The public label is the name of the characteristic in customer-facing text, where tech specs appear as ‘public label: value’, followed by the unit of measurement if specified.

You enter public labels for each language on the Public labels page, where you can also translate them using AI.

Where tech specs are used

  • On the product page. Groups containing tech specs have a TECH SPECS button, which displays the product's tech specs with their public labels. You can also filter this list by channel type.
  • By channel type. You can exclude a tech spec from certain channel types using Channel Types where this Tech Spec is hidden: it will not appear in the list for those channel types.
  • In AI features. Tech specs are part of the product information used by AI features.
  • In Excel exports. For entity types with tech specs, the Excel export offers the Export all TechSpecs data option.

You can create a tech spec with any attribute type, and it will always appear on the product page. However, only certain types appear in the TECH SPECS list and in the text used by AI features. Tech specs of other types are excluded without warning. The supported types are listed in Attribute types.
