How to create an attribute

This page is for administrators: the steps described require access to the administration area.

Add an attribute to an entity type: the new attribute appears in that entity type's records, in the tab and group you choose. You need access to the Attributes administration area.

Once the attribute has been created, you cannot change Name, Typology or Attribute type. To change them, you must create a new attribute.

An attribute name can contain only letters and numbers and must start with a letter: spaces, hyphens, underscores, accented letters and other symbols are not allowed. We recommend joining words with an initial capital for each word, for example CommercialName or PackageWeight.

  1. From the menu, select Admin, then Attributes.

  2. In Entity, choose the entity type.

  3. Click Add attribute.

    The New attribute form in the administration area, showing the Name, Typology, Label, Attribute type, Tab name and Group name fields and the Permissions and Visibility sections

  4. Complete the main fields:

    • Name: the technical name, written as described in the note above. It must not match the name of another attribute in the same entity type, even with different capitalisation;
    • Typology: Attribute for a standard attribute, Tech.Spec. for a technical specification;
    • Label: the name users see in the record;
    • Attribute type: the value type. The types are described in Attribute types.
  5. In Tab name and Group name, choose the tab and group. For a new tab or group, choose New tab or New group and enter the name in New tab name or New group name. The first two characters of the name determine the sort order and are not displayed, as explained in Entity types, attributes and attribute sets.

  6. In the Permissions section, define who can edit the attribute using Read only, Editable by and Configurable by. The rules are described in Who can view and edit an attribute.

  7. In the Visibility section, choose where the attribute should appear: Show on bulk edit, Show on filters, Show on left pane, Include In Overview.

  8. Click Save.

The message Attribute saved appears and the attribute is available in the entity type's records.

To set the attribute's position within the group, use Sort attributes on the attribute list page, as described in How to sort attributes, groups and tabs.

If the type you chose has configuration options, finish setting up the attribute as described in How to configure an attribute. All form fields are described in Attribute settings.

A tech spec

When you select Tech.Spec. as the typology, the form also shows:

  • Locale and Public Label, for entering the public label in each language;
  • Unit of measurement, the unit of measurement displayed after the label;
  • the list of attribute sets: click Add attribute set to assign the tech spec to an attribute set and specify its position in Sort order;
  • for products, Channel Types where this Tech Spec is hidden, the channel types for which the tech spec must not appear in the list of tech specs.
